Lead Tax Analyst - Denver, Colorado



The Lead Tax Analyst is responsible for the preparation, filing, estimating, paying and reconciling all of the United States and Canadian tax returns, to ensure compliance with tax reporting requirements. This role will maintain the tax software system, document the compliance processes and provide support/training to other departments. Additional responsibilities of the position will be to perform data analysis and be pro-active in identifying potential tax issues and eliminating audit risk.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparing and filing timely tax returns for a given segment of the business to the proper taxing authorities for property tax, multi-state income/franchise taxes, sales/use taxes, GST/VAT taxes and gross receipts
  • Resolves issues encountered by staff and Lead Tax Analyst during daily operations and determines appropriate solutions
  • Conducts training for new employees, peers and internal customers to help support daily functions and operations; acting in a role of a subject matter expert
  • Creates, maintains and trains staff and senior staff on audit quality workpapers, reports and support documentation for returns, audits and projects
  • Reviews and analyzes audit findings to reduce audit liability while working with state, federal or local agencies
  • Researches and interprets relevant and changing tax laws and uses professional judgement in applying tax decisions
  • Reconcile all sales/use/GST/HST/PST/QST general ledger accounts monthly and prepare journal entries as needed
  • Performing duties related to the issuances and renewals of business licenses and updating all secretary of state filings
  • Validating and processing exemption certificates for all tax exempt entities, with the ability to understand and support the determination of proper taxability of products and services sold to customers
  • Working with external and internal customers in a collaborate approach to establish and maintain good working relationships
  • Responding to tax jurisdictional notices and inquires
  • Completing of special projects as assigned by Tax Manager





  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required



  • 7+ years of recent sales/use tax and audit or equivalent public accounting experience
  • Master’s Degree or CPA preferred


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Excellent interpersonal communication aptitude with the ability to work well within a team setting as well as with internal and external customers
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Excel using tables, pivot tables, advanced functions and compound functions
  • Working knowledge of SAP and manufacturing industry preferred
  • Ability to review processes and identify improvements to develop best practices
  • Disciplined work ethic and the capability to handle multiple projects
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Integrity, humility, ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities and complete work timely
  • The ability to exercise considerable judgement in tax issues and filings
  • Working knowledge of Avalara (Cert Capture and AvaTax) is a plus 
  • Working knowledge of sales and use taxation
  • Strong leadership skills
